Personally, definitely going to buy a pair, generally pretty flexible to big updates like this.

But in practice: what was the rush to make this move all at once? Why not introduce the AirPods and lightning earphones a year before you remove the port?

Instead of allowing the story to spread by rumour (in the hope it would defuse by the time the iPhone 7 launch arrived), they could have been more proactive.

Who knows the story behind the scenes, perhaps it’s something like this:

• This is literally the soonest AirPods could have launched
• They fear making them available without a big “post headphone jack” narrative would hurt their adoption
• They have to make the leap with the iPhone itself sooner or later so prefer to pull of the bandaid all at once.
