A really enjoyable read and compelling argument, if it turns out to be true. The catch is, JJ Abrams style tends to leave enough open ambiguities that they can pull in what they need in future – in this case, I could see a post that argued just as compellingly that she’s Luke’s.

I think this antifragile approach is actually perfectly suited to modern storytelling. Examples like Breaking Bad show me how well you can wire together the present of your story by latching onto some of these previously hanging themes and opportunities as they suit you.

And Game of Thrones seems to be headed directly toward the fan speculation about Jon Snow’s importance to everything, demonstrating the downside of a rigid approach.

If this Rey theory turns out to be true, it will be because the rest of the story that comes together in episodes VIII onwards set it up as the most satisfying answer. And if not, the switch may go elsewhere.

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve become increasingly comfortable that even this relatively cynical reading can be satisfying if what you’re really looking for is just a sense that you are in safe hands either way. That’s what the new Star Wars achieved for me.
