The Semiotician’s Oath

The Semiotician’s Oath:

Story.

Story is structure left behind when all of our memory pathways are reduced to their most common overlaps. Story is the method we use to process who did what to whom and where and why and how and when.

Story is also the way we are able to attempt to connect the dots even when we have only the most minimal information. We sometimes get it wrong, but we are still able to guess.

Applying for my English degree (many years ago), I claimed I was pursuing the study of the world, people, science, literature and everything else out there to experience. Most topics draw barriers around what is and isn’t within the discipline. Studying English was to exercise a different kind of discipline: when you have everything in play, how do you find what’s important?

Tell a decent story.
